Though small, this store, one of the oldest in the city and near the Gothic Quarter, is worth visiting just to see its wonderfully ornate ceiling. Pay attention, because just below the ceiling on the wall is about a foot of trim that appears to be a repeating pattern but actually deviates in one area with an interesting image.

This store, built inside an old bank, has truly unique feature. The left-hand wall, as you walk in, displays a large stone sculpture by a well-known local artist, Subirachs. Also, the thick metal front doors are perhaps the most unusual I have seen at any Starbucks. From the outside, the doors look even more interesting. If I were juvenile, I would make a certain joke, but I would never be so juvenile, would I?

This shopping center store is fairly ordinary, but it does have one unusual, and perhaps unique feature. It has two stories, and doors to the shopping center on both of those levels.

This store, the only one to open in Barcelona between my 2009 and 2012 visits, is smaller than one might think, from the facade, but does sport the newer design style. Well, mostly--you can still find the old-style tables and chairs.

Though I freely admit I have no love for Starbucks inside shopping centers, I must confess that this one, with its outdoor balcony view of the ocean (channel?, port?) is definitely a nice place to sit. It's too bad, then, that an errant barista had to turn this into a Store of Shame.

I'm going to guess this has happened at other locations around the world, but this is the first store I've encountered that was reduced in size.

The second store in Barcelona, unfortunately blighted by construction. WHY??? WHY MUST MAN CONTINUE TO BUILD??? Why can't we just let nature take its course. I'm sure that, given enough time, nature would grow into the form of Starbucks.

Located right on Barcelona's main tourist drag, this store, the busiest in Barcelona, is large, but perhaps not large enough if the crowd I saw when I visit are a typical indication of volume. In 2012 this store was remodeled and looks spectacular!!! https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10150907854929867&set=a.10150506257339867.462223.757094866&type=1 https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10150907851454867&set=a.10150506257339867.462223.757094866&type=1

This store has a really interesting design. Upon seeing the facade, I expected an older look, and I was right. A stone floor leads down past the counters, under an arched ceiling, to a stone staircase that leads to another seating level. At the end of that floor, where the conference tables are, is another stone staircase that leads down to a basement and yet more seating. Actual visit August 5.

Licenced Stores
My Starbucking rule regarding store ownership are complicated and will be explained fully in my as-yet-unpublished book, but here are the basics. If Starbucks has a proper company in a country, such as Starbucks United States or Starbucks United Kingdom, then I only count stores operated, in whole or in part (sometimes there are partnerships) by Starbucks. In these countries, stores operated under license by other companies do not count. In most countries, however, Starbucks operates stores in a joint venture with another company (such as Tata in India) or licenses the brand to a primary (exclusive or semi-exclusive) partner, such as Alsea in Latin America and western Europe or Al-Shaya in the Middle East). In such cases I visit stores operated by those primary licensees, but not stores licensed to secondary licensees such as SSP or HMSHost. Additionally, in the U.K. and France, Starbucks franchises to a small set of companies, and I do not count those stores. Finally, note that some stores listed below might have closed down.
