Starbucks in Cleveland

PLEASE NOTE
The stores pictured below are labeled with information that comes directly from the official Starbucks web site. The only alterations I have made are to remove certain punctuation marks. Please do not report any errors in the names or spellings of streets or cities to me, but rather to Starbucks. Once they fix the error on their end, my database will pick it up. I will fill missing photograph dates as I have time, and I will continue to try and obtain store opening dates.

200 Public Square

This location does not quite have two stories, but with the seating located a half-story up from the bar, it's the closest thing Cleveland has to offer. But why was its original name, BP Building, changed?

Hah! This is funny. The former occupant of this building was a different coffee shop that offered a drive-thru. But when the Starbucks was built, the residents protested (or asked nicely, or whatever) the drive-thru because of the traffic, and Starbucks conceded. However, patrons would still drive up to the window and wait and then complain about the "slow" service, until the staff put up a sign explaining that the drive-thru is not operational. Boy, I'd love to have seen the looks on some of their faces when they discovered they'd been waiting all that time for nothing.

Oh, and before I forget--check out the cool design and paint scheme!

Hanna Building

I had to wait about 15-30 minutes for the electronic sign to cycle back to the message welcoming Starbucks to the Hanna Building, but I thought it was just too neat to pass up. Anyway, this is Starbucks apparently gets some cachet from being located in the well-known and historic Hanna Building, in the heart of Playhouse Square, in the theater district. The store stands to become even more appealing once it receives approval to open up the balcony to customers and the occasional musical act.

Society Tower

This building, which formerly housed the Society National Bank, is actually now known as the Key Tower, and is the tallest building in Cleveland.

I suppose this might change at any moment, but this is one of the few stores I can remember seeing where the cups are stored horizontally instead of vertically. Okay, okay, I'll admit I'm reaching for unique details here.

Now this is a truly charming store, not only because of the old building that houses it, but because it happens to be right next to the waterfall itself.

Mayfield & Lee (UCO), Cleveland Heights

OPENED: ?, PHOTO: ?

With the exception of the Harlem store, this is the coolest of the UCO stores that I have seen. Actually, if you just look at the building itself and the interior, this store is prettier. But I am biased towards New York City and its fantastic urban cityscapes, so if I had to choose, I'd prefer to hang out there, where the view out the window would be more interesting.

This location is in another one of those trendy new commercial developments build on land where perfectly good grass and foliage (presumably) used to be. Whenever you see a Cheesecake Factory and a California Pizza Kitchen in close proximity... watch out!

Um... the other photo really has nothing to do with the store, but I don't get to see snow buildups like that in Texas, so I took a photo.

Here's a nice little homey-looking store on the outskirts of Cleveland. While the design is mostly corporate, it at least has a wooden floor to give it some atmosphere.

Hey, hey, this store has not two, but three levels, and two staircases. One of the rooms upstairs is a conference room that can be reserved for meetings, and the other is a cozy place to hide out and read "Reflections", a magazine put together by the Plain Dealer, Cleveland's primary newspaper.

The partners at this store must love humour, because you'll find comic strips, most coffee-related, taped throughout the bar. And at one point, they partners devised a system of baseball sigals to call out the drink orders, much to the amusement and bemusement of the customers.

Licensed Stores (not operated by Starbucks)

PLEASE NOTE
The list below is not meant to be a complete list of licensed stores. Some licensed stores are not listed on the Starbucks web site, and some of the stores listed below might have closed. That's not really important. I only keep track of them so I know which ones I don't need to visit. But if you know for certain that any of these are actually operated by Starbucks, please let me know (and send me a phone # so I can double-confirm).
