Starbucks in Houston

PLEASE NOTE
The stores pictured below are labeled with information that comes directly from the official Starbucks web site. The only alterations I have made are to remove certain punctuation marks. Please do not report any errors in the names or spellings of streets or cities to me, but rather to Starbucks. Once they fix the error on their end, my database will pick it up. I will fill missing photograph dates as I have time, and I will continue to try and obtain store opening dates.

It's just a tiny slice of a store, true, but this is the first one in downtown Houston to be visible from the street. A sign on the exterior would help, but at the time I visited, they were unsure of whether they would be allowed to put one up.

This store opened on the same day as the nearby Nasa Road store, and I visited both a couple of weeks after they opened, one right after the other. I noticed that, although they both used standard corporate design elements, they had strikingly differently looks, which makes me wonder if this is not intentional, that differnet designs are chosen for nearby stores to lessen the impression that all Starbucks have cookie-cutter designs.

The unusual round wall in those store is actually an accident, but I think it's a happy accident.

On a subsequent visit to this store I found something interesting. Because the store only has one table near a power outlet, the manager bought a pair of small plastic tables that can be used by customers who have laptops and are sitting on the comfy chairs.

This store is distinctive not only because it is right across the street from another Starbucks, the only such instance in Houston, but also because of the striking exterior design and, inside, non-standard design elements, such as the Navy-style chairs, and a fish tank embedded in the wall.

San Felipe & 610

OPENED: ?, PHOTO: 25 December 1999

The next major street up from Westheimer is its little sidekick San Felipe. Like the Lone Ranger and Tonto, these two streets boast over a quarter of the Starbucks location in the Houston metroplex. I like this store--the assistant manager's been to Nashville. The store's downside, as with the other Galleria-area stores (most of them) is the traffic. Nowhere to run to, nowhere to hide.

Westheimer & Post Oak

OPENED: ?, PHOTO: ?

This is Houston's flagship store, and it's pretty sweet. Even though it is not two stories tall, appearance to the contrary, the extra high ceiling gives the already large interior a great sense of ampleness.

I suppose the first thing to notice is the circular section in the center containing both chairs for the loafers and counters (with nearby modem lines) for the studious set. As I understand it, live musicians will be allowed to play in that center section. The track lighting will probably come in handing for this. Outside the center there are plenty of tables, couches, and sofas. The conference/study tables are of a new style, with a thinner slab of wood that is lighter. I like it!

One feature I've seen nowhere else are the bathroom doors made partially of frosted glass. In fact, the entire bathroom is cool, with this whole metallic motif going on.

One downside would be the ugly vinyl couches.

The addition of this store makes it now three successive major intersections on Voss that have Starbucks (Westheimer and San Felipe are the other two). This newest store definitely has more charm than the other three, especially in the little cubbyhole-like room at the back of the store. The oddly-shaped enclosure (with four walls at queer angles) is separated from the rest of the store by a gab in the wall so small that your average football player would have to turn sideways to squeeze through.

One other interesting element I noticed is a pair of triangular cushioned footrests in a earthy-toned polka dot pattern machine that of the couches.
